The Changing Seasons – August

August seems like a distant memory as we’ve already passed the halfway mark for September. From what I recall though, it was mostly me readjusting to my old Seoul ways (for better or worse) after a lovely break back home in July. Better, as in back to enjoying creative pursuits around the city. Worse, as in eating out all the time, and not always the healthiest option.

I started filming little bits and bobs from my life for a bit in August to try to record these everyday moments. I know someday (actually pretty soon) I won’t live here any more and I will miss the little things, like public transit and Korean food and all the cultural opportunities.

Below is a little compilation of a few days in August which sums up my month pretty well. Eating food, going to a local artist “The Drawing Hand’s” open studio a couple times, and walking around the city. Basically all the fun stuff outside of work. πŸ™‚

I got a few snaps from dinner with my friends at Villa de Spicy in the D Tower building near Gwangwhamun station.

This is ddukbokkgi (spicy rice cakes) before it’s cooked. The rice cakes are hidden under the noodles, ramen, spring onions, sweet pumpkin, fish cakes and beef!

In the video you can see the second part of the meal, where you add rice and fish roe to the spicy sauce and fry it all up. So good.

For dessert we went to Bills, a cafe in the same building.

Outside of the cake
With a surprisingly colorful filling!

Oh, and at the month I also got a new phone! After four and a half years with my Samsung Galaxy S6, I upgraded to a Samsung Note 10+ ! I don’t know if four years with a smartphone is considered long in other parts of the world, but here in Korea four years is an eternity. At the very least people here switch after two. I, being the stubborn mule that I am, wanted to aim for five with mine, but it was starting to malfunction too often for me to bear. The phone would turn off randomly when I used my camera, but only at the most inconvenient times. Like when the bride walked in at my cousin’s wedding. (sad trombone).

So it’s been nice not having to worry about storage space (from 32gigs to 256 baby!) and not having to delete another app every few weeks. I used my phone a lot to shoot little clips during my trip to Helsinki and Germany a few weeks ago (early September), so I will upload either pics or video of that here…eventually. Keep me accountable, WordPress world!

And OMG! That video is sooo cool! But I shouldn’t have watched it just now because I’m sooo hungry and this definitely didn’t help! πŸ˜‚ My, the food looks just so yummy!

  2. Love your video!
I know it’s β€œnormal” to upgrade phones frequently, but I still use my first smartphone β€” an iPhone 4. It works, and since I don’t use it for much besides calls/texts and for accessing email, I am loathe to upgrade.
