Veganique – Vegan Bakery in Seoul

Hello friends! My friend Su is hosting a virtual tea party and this month she’s got some scrumptious pastries, snacks and breads to share. For my contribution, I bring you a slice of vegan coconut banana pound cake and a some vegan milk tea from Veganique, a local vegan bakery and cafe.

Veganique is located in a hidden alley just off the main gate of Ewha Womans University. In normal times, the area is crawling with tourists and students alike. There’s plenty of boutique shops, all the mid-range Korean makeup brands, cafes and eateries up and down the main streets. However, insiders know to take a right turn into the alley next to the main gate for some hidden gems. Just follow the painted pear flowers to enter the alley.

Veganique had an established online business before they opened their physical store about three months ago… just as Coronavirus was blowing up in Korea. I really feel for all small businesses affected by the virus, but especially those that planned openings for that time. Being next to the world’s largest women’s university AND a tourist hotspot would normally be a great location for a trendy vegan bakery. But normal left the building a long time ago. I spoke a bit with the owner, and it sounds like they’re getting by as of now.

This day I tried their signature vegan milk tea (earl grey with soy milk) and the coconut banana pound cake. The cake was wonderfully banana-soft in the middle and coconut-crispy  on the outside. The milk tea was just sweet enough, but not too sweet like the milk teas sold in convenience stores.

The bakery has many other yummy offerings: peanut butter brownie, orange caramel tea cake, plum chocolate brownie, green tea ganache… You can be sure I’ll be doing my part to support local business by trying them all. (It’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it!)

After cake and tea I stopped by an indie bookstore across the way and picked up a magazine about the nearby neighborhood of Yeonnam-dong. I’ve already explored a little of Yeonnam-dong for its boutique stationery shops and cafes. Now I’m excited to learn more about the neighborhood.

    I love the look of your coconut banana cake (two of my favourite things) and the other goodies are pretty tempting too. I feel so sad for wonderful businesses like your vegan bakery which are offering really something really good and worthwhile, but are suffering with the pandemic. I hope that they survive and thrive.

  3. I admire your commitment to keeping our little businesses going: you’re absolutely right – someone’s gotta do it, so why not us, right?

    Their flavour combis are so exciting: chocolate with green tea, strawberry with red velvet. And milk tea – I can’t ever say no! to milk tea.

  8. I’ll have everything of the menu, thank you! (I know awfully greedy but as you said someone’s got to support these small businesses and I’m determined to help you with this Herculean task. 😉)
    The banana cake looks so scrumptious – I’m salivating right now! I never had milk tea in a shop, is it any different from just putting a bit of milk in your strong builder’s tea? Maybe more milk? And do you drink it cold or warm? I only put milk into this super strong black tea (builder’s tea) and have never tried it with Earl Grey (I think among tea totallers there’s a law against putting milk into Earl Grey! 😂). But it looks so yummy!
    I’ve just baked the biscuit for my raspberry poke cake – now I need to wait for it to cool down so I can add cream cheese on top. 😉

    1. Join me virtually as we eat all the vegan baked goodies!! Milk tea is… I think just a very sweet milky tea. I’m not sure how it’s made exactly but I think it’s just a black tea with lots of milk and sugar. It can be both cold or warm–there’s hot or cold in cafes, and hot and cold sold in convenience stores. I didn’t know Tea purists said no milk in Earl Grey! 😁 Also yes please raspberry poke cake 😍😍😍🍰🍰 I will trade you one slice of raspberry cake for a slice of banana cake!
