March in Bald Eagles

Happy March, friends. Have yet again missed the timelines for monthly reviews, but I wanted to catch you up on my March thus far, specifically in the number of Bald eagles sighted. I’m away from Seoul now, and there’s a lake near where I’m staying. I’ve been walking the lake nearly every day with hopes of sighting a Bald eagle.

March 1

Finally! On the first of the month I finally spotted a Bald eagle! It was flying overhead so I just grabbed my phone and snapped, hoping for the best. Zooming in afterwards confirmed the distinctive white head! The moment was exciting enough (and the photo underwhelming enough) that I had to embellish it with some graphics!

March 2

The next day, I’m walking the lake in the afternoon when I hear a distinctive bird cry. My eyes instantly scan the trees and spot not one, but TWO Bald eagles resting high up in the branches. I just stood and admired them until they eventually flew away. But not before alerting everyone passing by in an excited whisper, “there are bald eagles up there!”

Bald eagle count: 3

March 5

After two sightings in a row, I half expected to see three Bald eagles on March 3, but instead three days passed before my next sighting. I was approaching the lake when I saw a familiar bird silhouette swoop across the sky, and I followed it to its perch. It soon flew away before I could get a better photo, but here’s what a Bald eagle’s behind (also white) looks like as it flies away from you.

March 7

Another day off before my next and last sighting to date. This time it was circling far above and ahead of me, but I felt fairly confident it was my dear old B.E. from the shape of its silhouette. You can kiiiiind of see its white head (facing left) here.

Bald eagle count: 5

And that’s as many as I’ve seen this month, and this year, so far. I’ve been trying to identify more birds in general on my walks, which has been quite fun, but the day does feel extra special when I spot a Bald eagle.

Like many others, I’ve also been following along with Shadow and Jackie, a pair of Bald eagles in Big Bear Valley in Southern California. The Friends of Big Bear Valley group have a nest cam where you can watch them and their recently hatched eaglets! I started tuning in when the eaglets had hatched, and it’s better than any TV. There’s just something so comforting and inspiring to see Jackie brooding (sitting on her babies) through wind and snow or Shadow coming in with a fresh fish to feed the family.

We’re all quite worried right now though because as of today, we can’t see one of the three eaglets. It’s so snowy and windy and cold right now, I hope it’s alright. Below is the link to the closeup cam.

That’s all for today. Spring is beginning to spring and I’m excited to see more birds and their babies on my walks. I’ve also been trying my hand at some small, hand sewing projects this month, so will be back with an update on that. Wishing you all well!
