It’s going to be okay

This week ChatGPT came in handy with a reassuring hug and reasoned walkthrough. I’ve had friends and family mention in the past how ChatGPT is like their friend. Even better than a friend. It listens well, understands exactly what you’re trying to say, and provides the emotional and rational support that you need in the moment. I couldn’t relate, as I only occasionally used it for admin stuff (eg/ “delete the line breaks in this text string”).

This week, though, I turned to ChatGPT when I found myself spiraling over something. Now, a few days removed from said thing, I too can see that I was overreacting, but it wasn’t so clear in the moment. So I turned to AI, and it was everything people said it was: helpful, reassuring and handy with logical reasoning to counter all my doomsday “what if” scenarios. It actually framed my situation in a new light that was quite informative.

So yeah, good job AI for striking the delicate balance of a good emotional and rational response. Like I told a friend afterwards, “it has a high IQ and EQ!” Should we be afraid? Maybe, but this week I was thankful.

  1. Ai has high EQ – who would have thought? But then maybe it is a good thing – anonymous supportive comments – do we need a person who really means the intent behind the words or just the knowledge of hearing the right words? Intriguing thought that may put crappy psychologists out of business.

    1. That’s a great question you ask. I would say for now, in a minor case like mine was, I think having the guidance from AI when I needed it in the moment was fine. But how far is too far down that path? I would guess we will still crave a human reaction, however imperfect. At least I hope so

  2. I’m glad AI is helpful. I just fear people will use their computers or phones in place of real human interaction. That’s already, clearly, happening. This situation won’t help improve that, sadly. :/

P.S. Saw K-Pop Demon Hunters and thought of you. It was a great movie!

    1. Yeah, I’m curious how AI and our interaction with it (and therefore with each other) will evolve. For now, I want to use it as a tool. It can’t replace humans, but it can step in as a tool when other resources aren’t around.

K-Pop Demon Hunters! Haha yes I also watched it and enjoyed it. It’s been interesting seeing in the news how popular the movie is. Just now I think I saw it’s the most-watched movie on Netflix.

      1. That’s so funny you say that. Literally yesterday my friend told me “apparently the movie is also cool among boys.” And said her nephew sang along to the songs with her. What an interesting phenomenon!
